SUMMARY:🐢 The Philly Bookstore Crawl
DESCRIPTION:For the Philly Bookstore Crawl on Saturday\, August 26th\, we’re hosting an all-day workshop called Draw with Code: An intro to turtle graphics using Python. Stop by any time from 12 to 8 p.m. and learn to use Python Turtle\, a drawing tool based on the educational programming language Logo. All ages and experience levels are welcome\, and computers are provided. Everyone who attends will get a free zine and sticker! \nWe’ll also be giving out of free Philly Bookstore Maps\, as well as copies of Highlights and Blackouts by Heather Bowlan. \n➡️ Here’s a link to the zine\, including a printable PDF \nThe Philadelphia Bookstore Crawl is a yearly (at least\, that’s the plan!) celebration of Philadelphia’s wildly vibrant and wonderful bookstore scene\, the last Saturday of every August. This year’s will take place on Saturday\, August 26th. \nThe concept is simple. On the date of the crawl\, at the end of the summer\, participating bookstores around town are hosting unique and special events. Discounted books? Exciting giveaways? In-store author signings? You’ll see! \nThere’s no specific trail to follow. No route. Just a bundle of bookshops around town\, all doing something special on one given day. Though who knows. Maybe in future years we’ll have a trolley. *wink* \nYou can check out what shops are participating and what they are doing via the Interactive Bookstore Crawl Map\, as well as the list below. \nAnd if you’re a bookstore or author who wants to participate\, or someone who wants to join us as a sponsor of the crawl\, please reach out! \nParticipating bookstores: \nA NOVEL IDEA \n1726 E PASSYUNK AVE\, PHILADELPHIA\, PA 19148 \nBIG BLUE MARBLE \n551 CARPENTER LN\, PHILADELPHIA\, PA 19119 \nBINDLESTIFF \n4530 BALTIMORE AVE\, PHILADELPHIA\, PA 19143 \nBOOKED \n8511 GERMANTOWN AVENUE\, PHILADELPHIA PA 19118 \nTHE BOOK TRADER \n7 N 2ND ST\, PHILADELPHIA\, PA 19106 \nCHILDREN’S BOOK WORLD \n17 HAVERFORD STATION RD\, HAVERFORD\, PA 19041 \nDU BOIS-ROBESON PEOPLE’S CENTER \n4515 BALTIMORE AVE\, HAVERFORD\, PA 19041 \nPAT AT GIOVANNI’S ROOM \n345 S 12TH ST\, PHILADELPHIA\, PA 19107 \nHARRIETT’S BOOKSHOP \n258 E GIRARD AVE\, PHILADELPHIA\, PA 19125 \nH&H BOOKS \n2230 FRANKFORD AVE\, PHILADELPHIA\, PA 19125 \nHEADHOUSE BOOKS \n619 S 2ND ST\, PHILADELPHIA\, PA 19147 \nHILLTOP BOOKS \n84 BETHLEHEM PIKE REAR\, PHILADELPHIA\, PA 19118 \nIFFY BOOKS \n319 N 11TH ST ROOM 2I\, PHILADELPHIA\, PA 19107 \nTHE LAST WORD BOOKSHOP \n220 S 40TH ST\, PHILADELPHIA\, PA 19104 \nMAIN POINT BOOKS \n116 N WAYNE AVE\, WAYNE\, PA 19087 \nMAKING WORLDS \n210 S 45TH ST\, PHILADELPHIA\, PA 19104 \nMISCELLANEA LIBRI \n454 E GIRARD AVE\, PHILADELPHIA\, PA 19125 \nMOLLY’S BOOKS & RECORDS \n1010 S 9TH ST\, PHILADELPHIA\, PA 19147 \nMOSTLY BOOKS \n529 BAINBRIDGE ST\, PHILADELPHIA\, PA 19147 \nNEIGHBORHOOD BOOKS \n1906 SOUTH ST\, PHILADELPHIA\, PA 19146 \nPARTNERS & SON \n618 S 6TH ST\, PHILADELPHIA\, PA 19147 \nTHE SPIRAL BOOKCASE \n4257 MAIN ST\, PHILADELPHIA\, PA 19127 \nWOODEN SHOE BOOKS \n704 SOUTH ST\, PHILADELPHIA\, PA 19147 \nUNCLE BOBBIE’S \n5445 GERMANTOWN AVE\, PHILADELPHIA\, PA 19144 \n \n

SUMMARY:⚙️ Neo-Luddite Reading Group: 'Resisting AI' by Dan McQuillan
DESCRIPTION:Time and Place:\n2nd & 4th Tuesday each month\n6:30–8:30 p.m. @ Iffy Books \n➡️ Virtual Meetup Link\nContact: \nneoluddite@victorgom.es\n@notnaughtknot \nDiscord:\nEmail neoluddite@victorgom.es for an invite! \nYou may have played around with chatGPT\, or perhaps even used DALL-e to generate images from text. Though Large Language Models have been around since 2018\, they’re currently dominating the news thanks to the public release of these newer\, even larger models. While impressive\, like many technologies\, they come at a cost and introduce new risks. However\, there are specific issues related to the sheer scale of these models and they highlight the dangers of machines which allow for the consolidation of labor. \nThese issues are especially concerning given the lack of regulation in the tech industry generally\, and the tendency of productivity-increasing technology to further concentrate power in the hands of the few. This reading group will explore these risks and engage with how they work in the hopes of better organizing to protect the rights of workers and individuals. The goal is to have a better understanding of the costs (data\, carbon\, human labor) and risks (misinformation\, unpredictability\, bias) of making these machines\, as well as limitations in what they can learn about the world primarily through text. We will begin with “Resisting AI: An Anti-fascist Approach to Artificial Intelligence” by Dan McQuillan\, with additional optional readings. If you’d like to learn more about me\, you can visit victorgom.es for a bio. \nSchedule\nThe only expectation is that you read the chapter(s) of the book that’s listed for that meeting. I tried keeping it around 30 pages on average. Even if you don’t read the assigned chapters\, you’re still welcome to participate as long as you are mindful. \nFor each chapter\, I’ve also noted some optional readings for context\, so I’d suggest checking those out rather than reading ahead in the book! Optional readings are by no means required\, but they may add to and deepen our conversation. They’re a mix of news articles\, essays\, and journal articles\, so you can pick from type of text is most engaging to you. They pull from a range of disciplines and schools of thought\, which I hope serves to highlight and survey how many different people conceptualize issues with AI\, though it is by no means exhaustive. If you ever find yourself struggling\, reach out! Either directly or over discord to the group. \nI’d suggest you read this before anything else for some historical context: What the Luddites Really Fought Against by Richard Conniff. The Luddites will also comes up in Chapter 6. \nMeeting 5 (August 22nd): Resisting AI \n\n\n\nChapter 6. People’s Council\n\nRobot Rights? Let’s Talk about Human Welfare Instead by Abeba Birhane & Jelle van Dijk\nEffective Altruism Is Pushing a Dangerous Brand of ‘AI Safety’ by Timnit Gebru\nNotes toward a Neo-Luddite Manifesto by Chellis Glendinning\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n➡️ Complete reading schedule \nRegister (optional):\n\n

SUMMARY:💾🌾 Iffy Books Permacomputing Meetup
DESCRIPTION:Our monthly permacomputing meetup is on Sunday\, August 20th at 1:00 PM EDT. You can join us in person at Iffy Books (319 N. 11th St. #2I\, PHL) or via Jitsi Meet. See you there! \n➡️ Meetup Link\nFrom Permacomputing.net: Permacomputing is a more sustainable approach to computer and network technology inspired by permaculture. Permacomputing is both a concept and a community of practice oriented around issues of resilience and regenerativity in digital technology. In a time where computing epitomizes industrial waste\, permacomputing encourages a more sustainable approach\, maximizing hardware lifespans\, minimizing energy use and focussing on the use of already available computational resources. We do this because humans are part of nature and technology is an extension of humans\, and we acknowledge that technology has been used to harm nature. We want to find out how we can practice good relations with the Earth by learning from ecological systems to leverage and re-center existing technologies and practices. We are also interested in investigating what a permacomputing way of life could be\, and what sort of transformative computational culture and aesthetics it could bring forward. If you want to know more\, please start reading about what is permacomputing in essence\, and then dive into its principles. \nPermacomputing Aesthetics: Potential and Limits of Design Constraints in Computational Culture by Mansoux\, Howell\, Barok\, and Heikkilä (2023)

SUMMARY:📙 Poetry reading with Danielle LaFrance\, Jeremy Hoevenaar\, Cecily Chen & Léon Pradeau
DESCRIPTION:Hello Philly friends\, \nI hope all of you are managing to stay cool at the moment— the hallucinatory heat of high summer is truly upon us. Stay hydrated! \nI’m very excited to be hosting a phenomenal reading in a few weeks at Philly’s best radical bookstore\, Iffy Books. \nJoining us will be Danielle LaFrance\, a writer of the poetry-research-theory books JUST LIKE I LIKE IT (Talonbooks\, 2019)\, Friendly + Fire (Talonbooks\, 2016)\, species branding (Capilano University Editions\, 2010)\, and #postdildo (Talonbooks\, 2022)\, a component of a larger project that thinks and writes through the fantasised limitlessness and constructed limitations of sexuality\, communication\, and desire. Other poetry and critical writing have appeared in such magazines and journals as ASAP/Journal\, The Capilano Review\, LESTE\, Tripwire\, and Organism for Poetic Research. They collaborated on a feminist materialist co-reading and journal making endeavour About a Bicycle (with Anahita Jamali Rad) and currently on an intertextual sound project Yes\, Sydo (with Josh Rose). Yes\, Sydo has recently commenced with a reading + listening group\, which invites all to collectively critique the cultural significance of Homer’s Odyssey as it is intervened by other texts and sounds and presently unfolding contexts. They live deliciously and hate to rent and work on the sovereign\, yet still occupied lands\, of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm\, Sḵwx̱wú7mesh\, and Səl̓ílwətaʔ peoples. \nDanielle will be joined by our very own Jeremy Hoevenaar. Jeremy lives in a barrel with his beautiful family. There is a book called Our Insolvency\, published by Golias Books. \nAs if that duo wasn’t enough\, two Chicago denizens will be joining the lineup. Cecily Chen (she/her/hers) is a PhD student in English and sexuality studies at the University of Chicago. Her work focuses on fucked up Chinese women and bad sex. She is the resident gremlin & poetry editor at Chicago Review. \nLéon Pradeau is a poet\, translator\, and PhD candidate at the University of Chicago. Born in France\, he is now wondering what it means to be American and has naturally started with the small world of midwestern body shops\, where flesh\, steel and plastic are mutually commodified. A resulting chapbook\, titled body shop\, is in progress. His research and writing explore the erotic\, technical\, and political assemblages of poetic bodies. With his colleague Clara Nizard\, he has recently translated a volume by Cécile Mainardi\, Rose Mortal Activity. Parts of it are forthcoming in FENCE this Summer. \nWe’ll be arriving at Iffy (319 N. 11th St #2I) around 7p\, with readings to follow shortly thereafter. It would be great to see you! See attached flyer in my typical style\, featuring a very sultry Scotty. \nUntil then\, love and solidarity to you all!\nted

\nMeeting 4 (August 8th): Resisting AI \n\n\n\nChapter 5. Post-Machine Learning\n\nPygmalion Displacement\, When Humanising AI Dehumanises Women by Lelia Erscoi\, Annelies Kleinherenbrink\, & Olivia Guest\nEveryone should decide how their digital data are used – not just tech companies by Jathan Sadowski\, Salomé Viljoen\, & Meredith Whittaker\nWhat is the point of fairness? Disability\, AI\, and the Complexity of Justice by Cynthia L. Bennet & Os Keyes\nAutomating autism: Disability\, discourse\, and Artificial Intelligence by Os Keyes\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n➡️ Complete reading schedule \nRegister (optional):\n\n

SUMMARY:⚙️ Neo-Luddite Reading Group: 'Resisting AI' by Dan McQuillan
DESCRIPTION:Time and Place:\n2nd & 4th Tuesday each month\n6:30–8:30 p.m. @ Iffy Books \n➡️ Virtual Meetup Link\nContact:\nneoluddite@victorgom.es\n@notnaughtknot \nDiscord:\nEmail neoluddite@victorgom.es for an invite! \nMeeting 3 (July 25th): Resisting AI \n\nChapter 4. Necropolitics\n\n\n\n\nThe Values Encoded in Machine Learning Research by Abeba Birhane et al.\nMachine Bias: Risk Assessments in Criminal Sentencing by Julia Angwin\, Jeff Larson\, Surya Mattu\, & Lauren Kirchner\nHow We Analyzed the COMPAS Recidivism Algorithm by Julia Angwin\, Jeff Larson\, Surya Mattu\, & Lauren Kirchner\nHomeland Security Uses AI Tool to Analyze Social Media of U.S. Citizens and Refugees by Joseph Cox\nAlgorithmic Colonization of Africa by Abeba Birhane\n\n\n\n➡️ Complete reading schedule \nRegister (optional):\n\n
