SUMMARY:🐜 Reading & discussion with José Alaniz\, author of 'Puro Pinche True Fictions'
DESCRIPTION:On Thursday\, November 30th we’re hosting an event with José Alaniz\, author of the new book “Puro Pinche True Fictions” (FlowerSong Press). \nAuthor/cartoonist José Alaniz has released a new prose/comics collection titled Puro Pinche True Fictions. The hybrid book collects short stories and comics\, mostly set in the Rio Grande Valley along the Texas/Mexico border. The stories reflect the author’s upbringing in this region as a second-generation Mexican-American\, at times fusing folk beliefs with Bradbury-style science fiction. For example\, “Tamales” sets the immigration narrative on Mars in 2063\, when a migrant family makes the crossing in search of work via (malfunctioning) rocket. \nOther stories\, like “Genoveva” and “Where You Stop the Story\,” retell painful family episodes going back years and generations. The comics section\, “Electric Youth\,” recounts incidents from Alaniz’s childhood in South Texas\, some of them told in Spanglish. These range from nostalgic (like one showing how common and pleasant it used to be to cross the river to Reynosa\, Mexico for family outings) to funny/gross (the author’s memory of stepping on a nail) to self-flagellating (the reimagining of ethnic self-loathing through a Star Wars metaphor). This collection will appeal to readers with an interest in contemporary Chicano fiction and comics. \nAbout the author \nJosé Alaniz was born in Edinburg\, TX\, in the Rio Grande Valley along the US/Mexico border. He graduated from the University of Texas at Austin in 1993 with dual degrees in Radio-Television-Film Production and Russian Studies. He worked in Moscow\, Russia as a journalist from 1993-1994. In 2003 he earned a PhD in Comparative Literature at the University of California\, Berkeley. \nSince 2003 he has worked as a comics scholar and professor at the University of Washington\, Seattle\, in the Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures and the Department of Cinema & Media Studies. He has published three monographs: Komiks: Comic Art in Russia (2010\, University Press of Mississippi); Death\, Disability and the Superhero: The Silver Age and Beyond (UPM\, 2014) and Resurrection: Comics in Post-Soviet Russia (Ohio State University Press\, 2022). He has also co-edited two essay collections\, Comics of the New Europe: Reflections and Intersections (with Martha Kuhlman\, Leuven University Press\, 2020) and Uncanny Bodies: Disability and Superhero Comics (with Scott T. Smith\, Penn State University Press\, 2019). He formerly chaired the Executive Committee of the International Comic Arts Forum (ICAF) and was a founding board member of the Comics Studies Society. \nHe has released three comics/prose collections: The Phantom Zone and Other Stories (2020) and The Compleat Moscow Calling (2023)\, both from Amatl Comix\, and Puro Pinche True Fictions (2023\, FlowerSong Press). His comics have also appeared in The Stranger\, the Seattle anthology Dune\, Tales From La Vida: A Latinx Comics Anthology (2018)\, BorderX: A Crisis in Graphic Detail (2020) and SCARFFF.

SUMMARY:🌊 Speculative Futures Reading Group: 'The Great Derangement' by Amitav Ghosh
DESCRIPTION:On Wednesday\, November 29th at 7:00 p.m. we’ll meet to discuss the book The Great Derangement: Climate Change and the Unthinkable (2016) by Amitav Ghosh. Hope to see you there! \nGet the audiobook on Libro.fm. \n  \nAre we deranged? The acclaimed Indian novelist Amitav Ghosh argues that future generations may well think so. How else to explain our imaginative failure in the face of global warming? In his first major book of nonfiction since In an Antique Land\, Ghosh examines our inability—at the level of literature\, history\, and politics—to grasp the scale and violence of climate change. \nThe extreme nature of today’s climate events\, Ghosh asserts\, make them peculiarly resistant to contemporary modes of thinking and imagining. This is particularly true of serious literary fiction: hundred-year storms and freakish tornadoes simply feel too improbable for the novel; they are automatically consigned to other genres. In the writing of history\, too\, the climate crisis has sometimes led to gross simplifications; Ghosh shows that the history of the carbon economy is a tangled global story with many contradictory and counterintuitive elements. \nGhosh ends by suggesting that politics\, much like literature\, has become a matter of personal moral reckoning rather than an arena of collective action. But to limit fiction and politics to individual moral adventure comes at a great cost. The climate crisis asks us to imagine other forms of human existence—a task to which fiction\, Ghosh argues\, is the best suited of all cultural forms. His book serves as a great writer’s summons to confront the most urgent task of our time. \n

SUMMARY:💻 Future of Coding Meetup
DESCRIPTION:Future of Coding is an online community with a welcoming\, cooperative\, and revolutionary spirit. We are unified in the belief that the common practice of programming is tragically less humane than it could be. There’s a world of possibilities that get more beautiful the further away from the norm you go. We’re here to explore this world together\, to discuss ideas about theory and practice\, and to champion and support our members’ research and development efforts to reimagine computing.

SUMMARY:💾🌾 Iffy Books Permacomputing Meetup
DESCRIPTION:Our next permacomputing meetup is on Sunday\, November 12th at 1:00 PM EST. You can join us in person at Iffy Books (319 N. 11th St. #2I\, PHL) or via Jitsi Meet. \nThis month we’re discussing the talk “An approach to computing and sustainability inspired from permaculture” by Devine Lu Linvega. [Video link] \n➡️ Meetup Link\nFrom Permacomputing.net: Permacomputing is a more sustainable approach to computer and network technology inspired by permaculture. Permacomputing is both a concept and a community of practice oriented around issues of resilience and regenerativity in digital technology. In a time where computing epitomizes industrial waste\, permacomputing encourages a more sustainable approach\, maximizing hardware lifespans\, minimizing energy use and focussing on the use of already available computational resources. We do this because humans are part of nature and technology is an extension of humans\, and we acknowledge that technology has been used to harm nature. We want to find out how we can practice good relations with the Earth by learning from ecological systems to leverage and re-center existing technologies and practices. We are also interested in investigating what a permacomputing way of life could be\, and what sort of transformative computational culture and aesthetics it could bring forward. If you want to know more\, please start reading about what is permacomputing in essence\, and then dive into its principles. \nPermacomputing Aesthetics: Potential and Limits of Design Constraints in Computational Culture by Mansoux\, Howell\, Barok\, and Heikkilä (2023)

SUMMARY:🎤 Disengineering Society Vape Mic Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Vape Mic: Build a DIY mic using parts from a disposable vape\na workshop led by the Disengineering Society \nIn a world of products planned for obsolescence\, disposable vapes reign supreme as pieces of modern technology that are almost never properly recycled. While the vape juice may run out\, the battery\, sensor\, and sturdy housing are still perfectly usable. Disengineering’s “post-nicotine” design makes use of these would-be disposed-of components by adding a mic element\, some simple DIY engineering\, and an aux output to get the vape mic. \nThis project introduces electret microphones\, waste component rewiring\, and a simple power supply circuit. The goal of this project is to create a microphone housing from a disposable nicotine vape\, using a few of the components inside the vape. \nThe Disengineering Society will have some discarded vape devices to share for this project. But feel free to bring your own if you have one. \nWe’re doing a $5–10 suggested donation for this workshop. It’s fine if you can’t afford it. \nRegister:\n\nThe Disengineering Society is a group that takes a non-conventional approach to the engineering space by facilitating an environment for people to work together to hack hardware\, software\, and e-waste for sonic repurposing and re-engineering. We aim to combat the notion of “planned obsolescence” by pointing to DIY culture as a tool through which awareness can be raised\, people can be educated\, and strange sounds can be made regardless of skill level or prior knowledge pertaining to electronics or music. Throughout the past year (our inaugural year as an official student organization) we have achieved this through hosting weekly workshops\, which we hold in our lab space at Wesleyan\, where we introduce basic DIY audio electronics concepts and provide opportunities for participants to experiment hands-on with these concepts. \n\nWe believe in dispelling the notion often reinforced by the DIY ethos that singular innovations are created by isolated individual geniuses in a linear progression of new objects and styles. Instead\, in our meetings and approach to engineering\, we recognize the outcomes of creative labor as ongoing and adaptive processes that\, in turn\, feed back into community building.
